There are no set rules but if you survive the initial things that seem to kill or maim everyone else, then you get to the next stage which is patience and opportunism.
In other words "Don't Panic" but look for opportunities every moment your life is in danger from any source. And then, don't be too proud to ask for help either.
In the end the people that survive either stay focused but are also patient or they don't make it often.
So, if you survive the initial blast of a storm, a fire, a drought or whatever it is, count your blessings, because you likely are going to need them for what comes next.
