Mountain Lion or Bobcat?

My wife talked with the gardener in Santa Barbara and he said it was much more likely that I heard a Bobcat in the old oak tree than a Mountain Lion the other night. Logically, that makes sense because Bobcats mostly don't attack people except in self defense whereas Mountain lions do sometimes attack people that are jogging or riding bicycles because it looks like they are an animal running away. Then they bite people that don't see them on the back of the neck when they aren't looking and that's it for them often.

But, a Bobcat people wouldn't be as nervous of because they often don't attack humans because they are sort of like Coyotes that way. They might eat small dogs and cats but humans mostly they will leave alone. So, I think the gardener is right because he says there are a lot of Bobcats around here.

Often people will hire a hunter or someone to remove a Mountain lion too close to civilization because they freak people out because they can be up to 220 pounds and 3 feet high. I myself haven't had to look a mountain lion in the eye in the wilds but I have been stalked many times by Mountain Lions. If you are instinctual and intuitive like me you first feel the hair on the back of your neck go up and you know something is stalking you. Then you look back often and act strong and walk strong towards your home or vehicle so you won't be attacked. If they know you sense them and you are big enough like I am(I'm 6 foot 5) you usually won't be attacked once they sense you know they are there because they don't want to be injured at all. Even a small wound in the wilds can be fatal over time for an animal because often it can't hunt with that injury and it starves and dies.

In Garland Park in Carmel Valley a friend of my son's saw a mountain lion up in an Oak tree as he walked under it hiking there. That changed his day a lot. So, if you are hiking in a forest under an oak tree it always helps to look up to see if there is a mountain lion there on the biggest limbs because it is one of their favorite lounging and hunting spots here in California.
NOTE: by the way for those of you in other countries a Cougar IS a Mountain Lion and there is a picture word button of a Cougar below at end of page if you are interested:
