I think people forget how the U.S. came about. It came about from a Civil Militia first institued in the 1600s in Massachusetts which later spread to all the states one by one. Without this Civil militia which has taken many forms (the latest is the National Guard of every state) the U.S. could not and would not exist in it's present form. So, when people talk about taking weapons away from people they are right on one level. It is safer (Individually) if people don't have weapons.
But as soon as you take this to the survival of our country long term the opposite is true. So without an armed civil Militia (as in the present national Guard of all states) and without an informal militia of veterans nationwide of all ages the U.S. would cease to exist within 50 to 75 years and become a dictatorship much like under Stalin or Hitler or Mao.
If you think back to Hitler first registering all weapons and especially rifles of Jewish people and then tracing through the paperwork and coming to take those weapons away, the third step was marching people off to concentration camps, taking away their clothes and marching them into gas ovens naked one by one after taking all their jewelry and things away. The last step was burning them alive or conducting really awful medical experiments on them or raping them to death, especially if they were women.
This is very important to remember today because this could happen again in any nation or nations on earth at any time.
So, though it might be personally safer in some people's eyes without weapons, the reality is the nation will stay intact as a democracy only as long as the populace is armed and no longer.
This is the unfortunate truth that most people seem to forget at their peril and their children's and grandchildren's peril.
