Because they tend to promote self sacrifice and Noble Causes which cause people to function in more and more evolved ways, further and further from being cave men and cave women where everyone mates with everyone and everyone kills everyone too which just creates a lot of really really confused people who don't really know which way is up.
How are religions presently extincting the human race?
In times of overpopulation like now, religions tend to say things like: "Birth Control is bad which tends to create more adherents to religions and more money for religions. However, they also cause extinction through genocide of any other competing religious groups.
A perfect example is the middle East where Sunni and Shia Muslims are extincting one another along with every other religion in the area like Christians.
As a result of this they foster the mammalian response to overpopulation which is genocide. If genocide turns to nuclear weapons through Iran, Saudi Arabia or Israel Nuking Iran then we have the beginnings of total human genocide of all humans on earth from radiation or planetary dismemberment and Earth becoming another asteroid belt.
This is no joke. Because this could be where the middle East is heading this century or next if birth control isn't practiced by everyone there from now on.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
