Spoiler alert for people who are watching Barry on HBO:
Why did he shoot his friend?
Because it was the only way he knew to keep his friend's wife and child alive.
His friend had never shot anyone before because he hadn't been in "the Shit" overseas like Barry had.
So, as his friend was losing it, Barry saw clearly the only way he would be able to save the lives of his friend's wife and child was to shoot his friend quickly.
Will Barry survive this?
Unknown at present.
Does this make Barry a sociopath in addition to being a "Hit Man" for money?
That remains to be seen.
However, in real life ex-soldiers often become mercenaries for pay around the world for different groups and countries.
And in life every action you take will take some kind of toll on both you and everyone you love or care about all during your life.
