So, the goal of the firefighters is to prevent the fire from Jumping over the McCloud River. If you go to where this fire is on the map you can find the McCloud River which comes into Shasta Lake and runs just to the right of where the Hirz fire is now. A friend of mine was telling me that the Hirz fire is only 10 miles away (as the Crow flies) from his 2 1/2 acres so he is worried at this point. But, if they can keep it below Highway 89 he and many people I know will still be okay.

The reason they don't want it to jump the McCloud River is because there are no bridges in that area over the McCloud River unless they go north to McCloud over highway 89 with fire engines. So, fighting the fire becomes about 10 to 100 times more difficult (at least with any kind of Engines even 4 wheel drive ones) even though helicopters and planes can still drop hot shots or fire retardant or water drops.
However, I suppose they might get a military bridge installed by the national Guard over where they are fighting the fire too onto a nearby dirt road on the other side of the river. The military is trained to do stuff like this. But that might take a week or more to actually do this and meanwhile the fire might grow in size.
