For September is an unusual time of year for temperatures this high to hit anywhere in the western States. It is much more common to have temperatures like this in June, July or August but not this high in September.
For example, I have been caught in a snow storm in the Panamint mountains near death valley when I was about 12 years old with my parents this time of year in a freak snow storm. It snowed 2 or more feet and my father had to hike out and get a ranger with a Jeep to get behind our big stationwagon to get out of the mountains by tying a chain to the rear of our station wagon to the front of the Jeep. Other wise we would have gone over the cliff on the dirt road in the snow. Because Dad didn't have chains for our car. Luckily we were going downhill so this could work. Otherwise our car might have been stuck there for the winter. And this was September of likely 1960. We had a huge Mercury 1960 station wagon then.
This is what they looked like. Ours was a turquoise light blue in color.
