Christian girl in Pakistan blasphemy case is flown out of prison
A young Christian girl accused of burning pages of Islam's holy book was on Saturday freed from a jail near Pakistan's capital where she'd been held for three weeks.
After her release from prison on bail, Rimsha Masih was seen stepping from an armoured
vehicle and heading to a waiting helicopter to be reunited with her
family.
The girl, whom supporters say is 11 and has learning difficulties, has been
held in a high-security prison for three weeks since being accused of
burning pages of religious script.
Her arrest caused a furious international reaction because she is thought to
have learning difficulties, is underage and illiterate.
The breakthrough, however, came last weekend when three witnesses came forward
to say they had seen the imam of a local mosque adding pages of a Koran to
ashes in Rimsha's bag.
Blasphemy in Pakistan can be punishable by death and burning a scared text can
lead to life imprisonment.
