Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones are a married couple of 31 years in the beginning of the movie. They haven't had sex in 4 years and they have two grown kids and at least one of their kids is married with a baby. Meryl Streep seeks out Steve Carel to save their marriage because she wants to be physically loved and touched again like they once loved each other.
It is a very funny movie with three really great actors in Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carel.
But definitely, they are not from the California coast. The types of people they play are more often found in middle America in the Bible belt where discipline, marriage and loyalty (So not sleeping together or touching is more the norm in a longer marriage). So, because the two of them play such up-tight but loyal people it becomes very funny indeed. Watching the two of them struggle to get to their emotions and feelings is wonderful and tragic and beautiful all at once. And like the movie, Hope Springs Eternal.
