I want to define overpopulation slightly differently to be more universally helpful in defining overpopulation within any given locality within a specific time frame.
Overpopulation is when local water and tillable land cannot support the amount of people there for a given time frame.
So, whenever water or food isn't enough for all those people locally to survive they are temporarily (or permanently in a relative sense) in an overpopulation scenario for a day, week, month, year, or even century or beyond.
So, even though those people can afford to buy food from other localities or countries to survive, still overpopulation exists within that area of land or water anywhere on earth.
So, to give you a good example, the U.S. ordinarily is not overpopulated.
However, right now, it is because of the drought in California and the western states. Ordinarily this is not a problem.
But, here is the problem of overpopulation by this definition now. California normally grows about half of the fruit and vegetables grown in the U.S. because it has 4 growing seasons which is exceptional compared to most places on earth. When water is plentiful California can do this.
However, we now are in a 100 year drought and California is now Overpopulated within this definition. And not only is California overpopulated within this definition but so are all the 48 states because the U.S. is no longer self sustainable in regard to the tillable land being able to grow enough food for everyone here.
So, even though as a very wealthy nation we can afford (generally speaking) to buy food from other nations, doing that might make some of those nations go into an overpopulation scenario where they cannot then grow enough food for their people either.
So, this kind of drought in California and most of the states west of the Mississippi River is causing a negative overpopulation effect cascade throughout the world that supplies food to California or the whole U.S. in all 50 states.
Also, in regard to water, California and all western states have to buy water from nearby states or other counties to fulfill their water needs so this might also deplete water supplies of nearby areas and farmers in those areas so they can no longer grow food there which causes even more food to be bought from other nations on down the line.
Then there are other models for overpopulation like in the Middle East. There it is different than the U.S. because lack of a scientific education and religions being very against any birth control are the major contributors to overpopulation which is causing governments to collapse, terrorist groups and warlords to form etc. However, the seeds of this kind of overpopulation effect go back all the way to World War I and II and also were caused by the more violent prohibitions of any birth control during the last 2 centuries as well.
Then western medicine kept many more people alive and then they all had children too and now the Middle East is a very horrific place to be because of birth control out of control and people not using birth control methods enough to keep things in balance.
And so overpopulation has caused the revolt in Syria, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, and now ISIL which is a group assassinating all Shia Muslims and Christians and Kurds that it can find.
But, the primary cause of all this hell is local overpopulation which is more than local tillable land and water can sustain whether it is in the U.S. or the middle east or anywhere on earth combined with extreme global climate change and now on top of this an El Nino that appears to be on steroids which could become even more terrifying and fatal to many as the summer and fall and winter progresses in various areas of earth.
So, it is not only drought that can throw any area into a temporary or semi-permanent overpopulation scenario, floods, hurricanes and other wind and water events or even snow events can throw an area into a temporary overpopulation scenario according to this model.
I find it very useful to look at all this in this manner so people stop blaming one person or one leader. In this way we see it is both all of us together combined with weather events that are causing all this mayhem worldwide and who will cause all this to get worse (the way things presently are) in the future.
By each culture taking personal responsibility for more events befalling them more people likely will survive in each culture and hopefully less people will be killed by events beyond their personal control.
Also, living in California right now food prices have risen since about May at least 30% so far which means poorer people in order to eat might have to move out of their houses and apartments or live on the streets while they try to work. Or people without jobs on the streets might die of starvation if they don't get more help during these times. And this sort of thing is true throughout the United States as well as everywhere on earth that could be temporarily or permanently defined within this Overpopulation model.
However, it is also true that anything anyone does to upset the apple cart so to speak will also cause cascading deaths worldwide through climate change and worse storms and droughts.
So, for example, the new Cold War and the Chaos in the Middle east are only going to multiply exponentially the amounts of deaths worldwide ongoing until something else happens.
I'm not sure what that something else would be. So, we may now be in an either temporary or permanent cascading new normal that reminds me of World War I or World War II only with Global Climate change and on top of that overpopulation over most of the world caused by not enough local water or tillable land that can grow enough food.
And because of wars caused by this overpopulation state likely many people aren't going to be alive out the other end of all this.
I know this isn't a comfortable thing to look at but someone has to if any of us are going to survive all this and come out the other side still alive and healthy.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
