Islamic State and it's effect on the Yazidi and Christians and other minorities

The 40,000 Yazidi and Christians caught on a mountain top without water or food and slowly dying there is horrific in itself. Then there are the Islamic state fighters encircling the Yazidi and Christians. But, the Islamic state thinks like a terrorist organization while it wants to take over  more territory. So, killing everyone but extremist Sunni Muslims is what they do, have done, and likely will continue to do until they are stopped at some point in the future.

However, what is really going on here? Does the Islamic state want to actually kill Yazidi and Christians or are they more like a mouse trap with the starving and dying of thirst Yazidi and Christians the bait for the Iraqi Government and western nations?

I think what the Islamic state wants is recognition, money and weapons and to kill anyone who isn't an extremist Sunni Muslim.

This is sort of like a hostage situation in a big city where a criminal captures a lot of people and starts shooting them one by one. What will the civilized world do now? IT doesn't look like there are many or any really good options for the Iraqi government or the western civilized world.
