Before Shale Oil and Fracking came into vogue worldwide we had about 25 to 50 years of oil left on earth. Though that has changed we still might have only 75 to 100 years left of any oil on earth.
The thing most people don't think about is that 5 billion people would die within 25 years of all countries not having oil under present conditions.
So, the only countries that might be okay at that point where there is no more oil might be more developed countries which were already 80 to 90% non-oil based energy.
However, from my point of view 2 billion people isn't sustainable over thousands of years without oil. The actual amount of people that would be sustainable for thousands of years might be about 500 million to 1 billion but even that would be under ideal circumstances.
However, if everyone lived underground to protect their genetics from our degrading magnetosphere which in some places already is zero to 10% of what normal was in 2000 and is constantly changing now which makes us more vulnerable (as well as all life on earth to mutation and serious genetic changes this might be a good thing for the human races survival.
Because if we are exposed to too much radiation from a weakened magnetosphere that used to protect us we could change literally in almost any way both good or bad or we as a race might become sterile and unable to reproduce at all.
So, living underground (at least when we slept at night) could protect us from mutation of all kinds. Also, there are other benefits to doing this. The first benefit is underground the temperature stays relatively constant so heating and air conditioning becomes less necessary but air circulation becomes more important to get enough oxygen to breathe.
Also, this could be very useful to people especially as temperatures increase more especially if they live around the equator to where people might start sleeping underground during the days and coming up to work during the nights when it is cooler.
In the U.S. Construction is often done at night to avoid the heat during the night time so men don't get heat prostration during the summer months already in many areas of the country, especially in deserts where temperatures might reach in August from 100 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit or more.
This just makes practical sense.
Likewise, it makes practical sense for humans to begin living underground to protect themselves and their children from heat and from radiation from a weakening Magnetosphere.
Another way to look at this is everything now alive on earth had to get into a hole in the ground or a cave when the asteroid hit the Gulf of Mexico and all the large land dinosaurs died. The only big dinosaurs that lived were in the ocean like Crocodiles, Whales, Sharks, Sea Elephants etc.
What human evolved out of were very small land creatures that were small enough then to dig a hole or den to survive the nuclear winter created for around 2 years by the impact of the asteroid in the Gulf of Mexico. (I believe they were only half of present human genetics and that 1/2 of our genetics came from Mars and the Asteroid belt planet after there was a nuclear war on the Asteroid Belt Planet out past Mars).
The reason I believe we come from another planet is that no other creature on earth can speak a language but humans. Where did this genetic trait come from? It had to come from off of earth.
If humans lived underground at least to sleep at night and to stay safe and warm or cool enough to go on and to breed and raise their young it is possible that if there were no cities or anything above ground but farms, roads, and parks then we might be able to feed (with good energy sources other than oil) about 13 billion people maximum here on earth.
Several Days later:
I was thinking about air circulation underground. In the summers the best time to recirculate air might be between 3 and 8 am in the morning if the area underground was large so you would get cooler air into the underground structure. Also, during the winters sunny days would be best to recirculate air for maximum oxygenation in a more safe zone of air temperatures while reducing energy costs.
Also, I was thinking fans could be solar powered to reduce power consumption. you really wouldn't need very powerful fans to do this in most situations so it could be done in a low power way over several hours using either battery power or direct solar powered from solar cells on the surface.
The other thought I had was that if one had about 10 feet of concrete above them even if they lived above ground it would reduce most of their problems with radiation except the radiation that bounced off the earth nearby them and through the windows into their structure. However, I think more research likely needs to be done regarding this in the future.
The biggest problem that people are going to have is where they live out in the open or in single family dwellings because radiation is going to go right through most roofs and affect their genetics over the long haul and the genetics of all their children. Radiation is coming in from space 24 hours a day through whatever cracks are there in the magnetosphere as it moves and alters depending upon solar winds and solar storms.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
