road maintenance in California suffering from gas prices

In California our roads are mostly maintained by a tax on gasoline. We have many more roads than most other states do so this is an important function here. However, because the price of gas is so low, the tax on this gas is much less and so there is no longer enough tax money to maintain our roads here in California. So, if you come here expect the roads not to be the best this summer. Usually roads get repaired during the summer here from the wear of rain undermining roads. So, even though gas taxes are often up to 1 dollar per gallon (depending upon county and local taxes) there isn't enough money to maintain all the freeways and roads this year because of low gas prices which also lowers the amount of money taken in in taxes statewide when people buy gas and diesel.
