Fox confirms $20M settlement with Gretchen Carlson
Media giant 21st Century Fox
settled Gretchen Carlson's sexual harassment lawsuit against ex-Fox
News CEO Roger Ailes on Tuesday for a reported $20 million and an
apology saying she "was not treated with the respect and dignity that
she and all of our colleagues deserve."
The company announced the former anchor's lawsuit was settled Tuesday. The monetary amount was confirmed to CNBC by a source close to the matter.
The company is also in settlement talks with other people, but none of the settlements will be as high as Carlson's, according to the source. Ailes will be contributing to the settlement, according to sources. "He is not contributing anything," Ailes' attorney said later.
The developments are the latest blows in the fallout surrounding allegations against Ailes, who was the founding chief executive of Fox News. In July, Ailes was ousted amid sexual harassment claims from Carlson that were followed by claims from other women.
"21st Century Fox is pleased to announce that it has settled Gretchen Carlson's lawsuit," the company said. "During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. She developed a loyal audience and was a daily source of information for many Americans. We are proud that she was part of the Fox News team. We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve."
Fox News also reported Tuesday that "On the Record" host Greta Van Susteren, who had defended Ailes against Carlson's claims, will be leaving the network after 14 years. Senior political analyst Brit Hume will take over her position.
According to a document filed in the U.S. District Court in New Jersey, Carlson voluntarily dropped her case against Ailes with prejudice on Tuesday, meaning she cannot file another claim against him.
"I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my Complaint," Carlson said in a statement. "I'm ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace. I want to thank all the brave women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me in their #StandWithGretchen. All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace in which talent, hard work and loyalty are recognized, revered and rewarded."
