Here are some of the things I learned which help me do better in life.
First, I built a retirement home with my father so it would be there for my Father and Mother when he retired in 1980. So, even though he passed away 5 years later we spent from 1968 to 1980 on many weekends building this home for my mother and father.
But, I must say most of the building on this i did was between 1968 and 1970 and likely 1978 and 1980 because of getting married and having children and living in Hawaii and Mt. Shasta and other places far away in California.
Most of the time growing up we lived in Rental units in California. My father first bought land in Escondido near "the Golden Door" where Martin Pretorius who was a health food and health expert bought a lot of land and subdivided it. But, for some reason my father eventually sold this land instead of continuing developing it. So, in 1968 he bought land nearby his best friend's Vacation land in up above Yucca Valley near Old Woman Springs Rd. So, after we built this place on weekends from 1968 until 1980 I also with my 2nd wife purchased land and built a home at 4000 feet in elevation on Mt. Shasta.
At the time I was worried about the U.S. going bankrupt and I started burying non-perishable food in 50 gallon drums on my land for when we couldn't buy food. Many people thought like this when the U.S. was driven to near Bankruptcy by the ridiculous expenses and waste of the Viet Nam War combined with the Arab Oil Embargo which basically made Gas and Diesel 5 times as expensive from 1970 to 1980.
So, imagine instead of paying 5 dollars a gallon for gas now (in California) and instead all of a sudden paying 25 dollars a gallon for gas.
This really screwed everyone in the U.S. and made people much poorer than they were in the 1950s and 1960s.
The wealthiest in actual (Buying Power) Americans have EVER been in history was between 1950 and 1970.
For example, a white 17 year old American without a high school diploma could work as a carpenter or garbage man and support 5 people, 2 cars and buy a home then in the U.S.
That just isn't going to happen (at least the 17 year old won't be able to finance this himself at this time without help).
Some of the decisions I made that helped my life succeed were building my father's home, then building my friend's home then building my own home and realizing I wanted to financially care for my wife and children. So, I started businesses to support my wife and children.
Also, if you aren't very practical financially your children will not survive. So, this frugalness and practicality served me well throughout my life including keeping good relationships with all my children.
So, the financial practicality that I learned keeping all my children alive to adulthood likely was the most important thing I learned that made me more successful than anything else in my life.
By God's Grace
PS. However, children are so incredibly expensive right now I likely would have to make completely different decisions in this world era in order to live with myself, my family and to go on living.
So, even though all this was true in the 1950s, 1960s 1970s and 1980s I'm not sure what I would be doing right now as a person between 20 and 30 years old in this world era.
