This movie is basically a horror movie. If you are going for a Spiderman thrill ride of fantasy then you will be disappointed. However, if you like superheros with neuroses of various sorts and charactors like the Comedian who rapes women and kills women pregnant with his child then you might like this movie. Rorschach grows up watching his mother be a prostitute and hit for watching. So his problems are the most severe. However, he reminds me the most of the men I knew from ages 3 to 15 from 1951 to 1963 who survived World War II and were messed up from it.
So, if you don't want fantasy characters like Superman and Spiderman and instead want really screwed up superheroes then this might be for you. In one sense most of the characters were believable which is not true in most superhero stories. Even the ending could at most be called a stalemate or compromise just like most of real life on earth.
The only truly redeemable characters for me were Dr. Manhattan, his second girlfriend and her next boyfriend(all who are superheroes). If you can handle a lot of scary stuff and Dr. Manhattan's blue dong(he's naked) and sexual stuff between both he and his girlfriends and his second girlfriend and her new boyfriend while constantly cutting away from an amorous setting to arms and legs being cut off and eaten in some cases by animals just as you are getting into the love stuff then you might like being subliminally messed with in crazy ways and actually enjoy this movie.
My wife has been sort of emotionally upset since she saw this movie. Though in some ways I think it woke her up out of the winter doldrums.
