How can this be true?
It is true because all life exterior to you is also a part of your interior. So, knowing others is wisdom, knowing oneself is to understand the whole universe.
There really is no way to separate yourself from everything in the universe. Therefore saying each of us is the universe is also a true statement.
When you truly understand yourself you are enlightened because you not only understand yourself you also understand the whole universe too.
