Fog near San Francisco has mostly kept the smoke away

And also kept it cool in this area. For example, the high today here where I am was 62 degrees. And yet it's 119 today in Death Valley and 121 tomorrow.
Why?

If the fires don't originate near San Francisco Bay area fog tends to keep the smoke either above the fog (so you don't breathe it) or fog causes the particles of the smoke to combine with water and fall to the ground as some type of condensation or precipitation like rain or dew. So, either way it keeps the air around San Francisco Clean even with fires 100 plus miles away bringing smoke sometimes in this direction and out to sea into the Pacific Ocean.
