So, the most likely to be hit by the Hurricane would be Pahoa and the part of Hawaii that is presently erupting. Not sure what that could or would do and maybe most people might think the same thing. Then 20 miles mostly to the North I believe where I lived in 1974 then is Hilo, which is sort of in the rain forest section of the island. Each of the Hawaiian islands has the rainy side (which usually is where a tropical rain forest tends to be and a desert side. Hilo is the Rainforest side of the big Island of Hawaii and Kona is the desert side where the Kahunas and Hawaiian kings lived.
They didn't live usually on the Hilo Side simply because mostly they were barefoot and in a rainforest it is easy to get foot rot and other things. So, health wise living on a desert side of the Island you can still fish in the ocean and streams run down even on the desert sides from the mountains where it rains a lot whenever it rains. The streams don't run all the time on islands, mostly only when there is good rains. But it tends to rain a little every day so you are going to have fresh water if you are near a stream bed coming from hills or mountains on the islands. But, you also have to watch out when it rains you could be in the wrong place when all the water arrives and since rain drops often are as big as one of your fingers there, water comes often fast and if you aren't prepared for it it isn't survivable. This is an important thing to know about the Hawaiian islands if you are going to go off on your own exploring by the way.
Also, in 1974 at Hapuna beach to the north I got bit by a scorpion (not sure they still have scorpions now) but then I couldn't walk for a few days after that because I couldn't feel any part of my leg or foot. This is likely another reason why kings and Kahunas hung out on Kona side too away from Scorpions and other things that bite. If you like to swim with tropical fish it's still a great place to do this in the oceans of the Hawaiian islands.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
