The Longest Government Shutdown was a fight between President Clinton and Gingrich in the House of Representatives 12-16-95 until 1-6-96

The longest such shutdown was December 16, 1995, to January 6, 1996, which affected all non-essential employees, shutting down many services including National Institutes of Health, visa and passport processing, parks, and many others. This happened again on October 1, 2013,[2] and on January 19, 2018.

furlough

During this particular furlough I was able to get married in Yosemite because of the shutdown because all reservations that people had made there years in advance were cancelled for several months. So, when Yosemite National park opened for a few days here and there My present wife and I were able to get married because of the unknown nature of the ongoing shutdown. So, the park would open for a few days (all national parks) then close down, then open up a few days, then close down etc. For example, when we did a fly and drive from Honolulu to the Big Island of Hawaii to see the active volcano there go off, Volcanoes National park was closed so we had to see the eruptions from a far distance as the park was closed then. So, the shutdowns helped us get married in Yosemite and have a wedding reception at the Ahwahnee Hotel but also interfered with us visiting Volcanoes national Park near Hilo, Hawaii on the Big Island. (If you are flying there it is easier to fly into Hilo) and rent a car there for visiting the volcano.

But, there is another airport in Kona where I have also flown in for snorkeling in January a couple of years ago. Also, if you rented a car in Kona I suppose you could take the short cut across the saddle between the two   high mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa over to Hilo and then south to the volcano from there. The last time I visited Volcanoes National Park I drove in a rental car with friends from Kona to Hilo and then to Volcanoes national park a couple of years ago now in January.

What was really amazing was the water even in January was about 85 degrees Fahrenheit on the Kona coast then. So, we were very happy snorkelers even in January 2015 I think it was.
