It's supposed to get windy and rainy by Friday night. A smaller storm than that one is going through the Santa Cruz Mountains right now on it's way to the High Sierra Mountains where it is snowing. From Friday they expect 2 to 4 feet of snow in the Sierras so all roads could be closed at some point into or out of the Sierras including Interstate 80. So, if you are traveling the Sierras expect closed roads from too much snow at one time or icy roads and be sure you have all wheel drive, 4 wheel drive or chains for your drive tires from now on.
If we do get 40 to 50 mph winds this means that lawn chairs or deck chairs and limbs and anything else loose is going to be flying around some. It also might mean that power is going to go out if limbs or trees break power lines too throughout Northern California. So, just like the Boy Scout motto "Be Prepared" is the addage for this weekend.
If you are not familiar with the term "Drive Tires" it simply means which tires the power is applied to in a front wheel drive or rear wheel drive vehicle.
But, if you have front wheel drive and are driving down hill in snow expect the rear end of your car to slide forward. If this happens if you have a hand brake if you apply it your car should straighten out. However, push the button (if it has one) so the hand brake doesn't lock on on you. You need to apply and release it for this to be safe doing straightening your car out on a downhill course on snow when the snow is slippery. This can happen whether or not your front wheel drive vehicle has chains on in the front on a front wheel drive car by the way.
A friend of mine told me about this the other day too where they expect 5 feet of snow in Dunsmuir:
