I was trying to remember because I'm on a veranda watching the sun in the late afternoon on the trees on Mt. Shasta. I noticed that the trees were green with some brown and I wondered which set of trees were called "Deciduous". I looked it up and deciduous trees are the ones who lose all their leaves every fall (Autumn).
And the ones that keep most of their leaves (but also shed a lot of them in the fall when they turn brown are called Evergreen Trees which are most Pines and Fir trees that keep their needles(their version of leaves) mostly year around. So, even though you don't get the same fall colors from Evergreen trees you do get the evergreens a little brown this time of year as they shed some of the summer needles for winter.
So, unless an evergreen is completely brown which means it's dead, as long as it has mostly green needles this time of year it's still alive and it is heading towards winter and sometimes snow.
For example, in California there are also evergreens that never see the snow like Monterey Pines and Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines live mostly near San Diego whereas Monterey Pines can live from about Morro Bay to north of San Francisco all along the coast but they don't usually live more than 10 to 20 miles inland. It think it's about the same for Torrey Pines near San Diego but I think they have to live nearer to the coast than Monterey Pines do.
