The Tibetans I met in India and Nepal were always a very kind and hearty people

However, at altitude and the weather and hardships often they didn't live then in the 1980s past 50 or 60 years old because of the weather and the altitude. However, this is likely true in places like the Andes too where people can live at very high altitude. For example, Tibetan people in Tibet at least in the 1980s lived from 8000 feet elevation to 15,000 feet in elevation because the whole place is very high altitude.

It reminded me a little of places like Flagstaff Arizona through Santa Fe through Colorado to Colorado Springs (all 7000 feet or more) and even Boulder and Denver which are at least 5000 feet in elevation or even Lake Tahoe which is 6000 feet in elevation.

Be careful suddenly going to 6000 to 7000 feet in elevation especially if you already live at sea level because you might be a litttle spaced out especially when you wake up the first morning there because sleeping at higher altitudes is a whole different thing than just going to a high altitude for part of the day I have found.

One time my son and I were driving back from Denver and drove through Taos, New Mexico and Stayed at the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, new mexico and had a headache all night from the altitude and didn't get rid of the headache from the altitude until we drove into Winslow Arizona which is around 4800 feet because that whole area from Denver to Winslow is pretty high Altitude even Flagstaff is 7000 feet in altitude. So, in places like this it can snow much earlier and much later than lower altitudes so it's important to be prepared for these situations. I remember when I first got my 4wd Tundra truck it snowed all the way from Flagstaff driving with my son likely in 2011 all the way to the Grand Canyon which is also

While its elevation—ranging from 2,000 feet at the canyon floor to over 8,000 feet on the North Rim—rarely causes altitude sickness, some visitors may experience shortness of breath on steep hikes or stairs.Jan 31, 2025

end partial quote.

So, even though the south rim is around 6000 feet you have to be very careful there not falling into the Canyon off a cliff or trail down into the Valley Floor there.

Groups of people new to the area often gather at the edges of cliffs so it is pretty easy to be accidentally pushed off a cliff there by spaced out people not used to the altitude just in awe of the area and not thinking clearly enough. So, watch out for that when you go there!

OH by the way I had a lady I knew from church in the 1980s that had wanted to go to Tibet her whole life. She was around 70 to 72 years old. She finally had her wish and died from Altitude of 12,000 feet when she got off the plane in Lhasa, Tibet. She died within 15 minutes of landing there in her plane.

So, going to 12,000 feet suddenly might kill you especially if you are not young enough and healthy enough to survive it!  (and even then you might need oxygen until your body adjusts to it).
