An Idiot Abroad on Youtube and Netflix: 2010

 I came into the living room tonight and noticed my daughter watching the first episode of "An Idiot Abroad put on originally in England on Sky network. But now it is on Youtube and Netflix. At first this person Karl is a complete fish out of water and unprepared psychologically for the foreign places Ricky Gervais and his friend put him. It is sort of a comedy of how most people not suited to travel in other countries might fare in really different cultures than they grew up in.

Even if you are prepared to go to some place like India or other foreign places from the U.S. it is going to be extreme if you go to the right places. However, even if you grew up in the U.S. you might not be able to deal with Burning Man in Nevada or walking through some of the ghettos in the U.S. unarmed either. So, it is like watching (Every man not suited for world travel) get culture shock and have interesting reactions to his experiences. Cultural Shock is sort of like getting hopefully more temporary forms of PTSD.  By Mexico I think he sort of liked being there and said so. World Travel is sort of an acquired taste and not everyone acquires it. But, world travel is extremely enlightening if you can physically and spiritually and culturally survive it.

However, as Thomas Wolfe once said paraphrased, "You can never go home again" (If you spend enough time traveling away from home) when you come back it is a worse culture shock than where you went to is when you first arrive).
