The Movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" permanently changed the way crazy people were dealt with in California and this became a tide that swept the whole country eventually in most states. Before then all sorts of people who were institutionalized and never should have been were released often onto the streets as what you see now, "Homeless People" with all sorts of mental and physical and combinations of health related problems.
Though people at least have the choice of not be institutionalized if they don't want to as long as they are not a threat to others, this has created many new problems.
For example, homeless crazy people scare many women and children for example. They are often abused or killed by gangs for sport. They are often scared or paranoid at times when it is inconvenient for them or others and sometimes people shoot them or do away with them and bury them in their back yards or the woods because homeless crazy people often have no rights at all or even identification. Often homeless people are criminals pretending to be homeless so they can survive without going to prison and this often works too. Homeless people can also be ISIS or other groups of people trying to invade the U.S. in some sort of clandestine way. Or they might just be people from other countries who came here on a tourist visa and decided to stay here because they like it better than their home country.
But, anyway you look at it here in California this movie permanently changed how people were treated to the point where you can be sort of half crazy or a total loon and still not be arrested unless you are harming someone or stealing something. So, homelessness has become a much different thing than it was when I grew up.
When I grew up we had Hobos who rode the trains around the U.S. But, we didn't have them living in cities openly in tents in some areas or along Freeways near trees. This is something entirely new since around the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. I think it is a combination of people being released from mental institutions because they weren't really crazy in the first place and maybe just a little eccentric or unique in their thinking instead. Some people never will fit into society in any way, shape or form and never would. It was always this way and in the past people like this became trappers or minors or petty thieves across the U.S. and mostly died young in some remote place without any human help.
But now, these wild places are less and less across the U.S. than they once were, even though they still exist a lot West of the Mississippi River. But, mostly what I'm writing about is how much things have changed since Reagan was Governor of California.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
