As power points in California go, Mt. Shasta and Yosemite are the two main ones for me. It was while I was hiking with my friend in Yosemite when I was 15 where I was really turned loose for the first time because my friend's sister and mother got sick and the Air Force Coreman (a medic in the Air Force) in the next campsite who took care of them while they had ptomaine poisoning. OF course this is 1963 when people trusted each other much more than they do now. So, my friend's mother and sister wanted us to go hike all day which was just what we wanted to do to and to swim in the Merced River and to Jump off the bridges into the deeper pools like people did then and then at night to watch the Firefalls of Cedar bark lit up like a waterfall off of Glacier Point. Yosemite then was sort of like Disneyland is now in some ways. It was amazing then.

In and amongst being "Turned Loose" like I had never been turned loose before
of course I found God and I have never forgotten God ever since. So, ever
since then nature and wilderness has been my church whether it was Yosemite
Or Mt. Shasta, the ocean, the beach, the forests, the deserts, wherever a lot of
people aren't where it is beautiful and where God is. The Himalayas, The Rockies
etc. Etc. Etc.
Recently I went to Seattle to Lake Forest Park (a suburb) and the forests there told me that they knew who I was even when I was first born and made this amazing connection with me to wilderness and forests all over the earth! I lived in lake forest Park from 1948 to 1952 when I was 4 when we moved to San Diego, California.
I was amazed at the work they went to to train me to be how I am with nature and wildernesses all over earth and in space as a soul traveler. People were rafting as we drove up the Merced River. There is an outfit called Zephyr river rafting I think that is still taking people down the river. But, if you are going to do it this year I wouldn't put it off because this wasn't the best water year for California but there is still plenty in the river as of right now.
