CALIFORNIA BATS LIVE MOSTLY WHEN THEY ARE ON THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA IN ATTICS OF HOMES OR BARNS. AT ONE POINT WE HAD BATS IN OUR ATTIC THAT FOUND OR CHEWED A WAY IN. IT'S IMPORTANT TO STOP THEM FROM DOING THAT BECAUSE THEIR GUANO (POOP) IS SO ACIDIC THAT IT CAN EVENTUALLY EAT THROUGH ROOF RAFTERS (BOTH WOOD AND METAL) AND YOUR WHOLE CEILING CAN COLLAPSE ON TOP OF YOU ONE DAY. THIS IS WHAT SOMEONE WHO EXTERMINATES BATS SAID TO US. I SOLVED THE PROBLEM BY FINDING THEIR ENTRANCE AND PUTTING A SCREEN OVER IT SO THEY COULDN'T GET INTO OUR ATTIC ANYMORE. SO, IF YOU HEAR SOUNDS OF SCURRYING IN YOUR ATTIC IT MIGHT NOT BE MICE, BIRDS OR RATS. IT MIGHT BE BATS.
WHERE WE LIVE IN THE FOREST FOREST RATS CAN BE A PROBLEM TOO ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER WHERE THEY PREFER TO EAT DOG POOP AND LIVE UNDER YOUR HOUSE BECAUSE MOST HOUSES IN CALIFORNIA DON'T HAVE BASEMENTS BECAUSE IT DOESN'T GET COLD ENOUGH HERE TO WARRANT THAT ESPECIALLY ALONG THE COAST BY THE OCEAN WHERE THE OCEAN KEEPS IT ABOVE FREEZING AT LEAST 99% OF THE TIME BECAUSE THE PACIFIC OCEAN IS RELATIVELY WARM SO OUR WATER TEMPERATURES STAY BETWEEN ABOUT 52 TO 65 DEGREES YEAR AROUND IN THE WATER AROUND THE VICINITY OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. THIS KEEPS OUR TEMPERATURES ABOVE FREEZING ON THE COAST. RATS LIKE TO BE WARMER IN THE WINTER AND OFTEN WILL MOVE UNDER YOUR PIER BLOCK FOUNDATION HOUSE AND EAT ANY DOG POOP IN PEOPLE'S YARDS THAT IS AVAILABLE TO THEM. THEY ARE PICA EATERS LIKE SOME DOGS ARE BUT RATS CAN SURVIVE ONLY ON DOG POOP UNLIKE DOGS.
YES. I THINK ONE OF THE REDDISH FUR COLORED BATS WOULD LOOK LIKE A RED BREASTED ROBIN WITH THE SUN GLINTING OFF HIM OR HER AT THE HEIGHT OF A TALL TREE.
