I started with 8 foot 2 by 4s Douglas Fir that people build houses with for strength and for safety. Then I took an old Vice likely vintage 1900 to 1930 that my grandfather had for a counterweight that I placed on one end of the 2 by 4 and clenched the teeth of the vice onto one end of the 2 by 4. then I drilled a hole and put in a metal pipe (likely 3/4 inch EMT like Electrician's use (that I was familiar with as an axle for the Trebuchet pivot. Then I build 2 triangular shapes out of 2 by 4s to create the stability for the weight of the large 8 foot long 2 by 4 while it is spinning trying to throw something some distance. Then I built a rectangular 2 by 4 frame to mount this on.
So, the heavy ancient Shop vice of my grandfather's which I played with in Seattle at age 3 and 4 was the power behind the trebuchet with it's heavy weight. I took a large gallon plastic milk carton and used it as a basket where we could put rocks or oranges or something like this and throw it a long ways to demonstrate to my daughter how people built things like this for ancient warfare. Also, it was something nice my daughter and I could do together for her school project.
Note: You could also use weight lifting weights or large rocks or boulders to weight your trebuchet to throw things further. end note.
