Princess Kate to make public return at Trooping the Colour, gives update on cancer treatment
LONDON — Kate, the Princess of Wales, is set to make her public return this weekend.
Kate, 42, said in a new written message Friday that she was still undergoing treatment for cancer but would attend the Trooping the Colour ceremony in London on Saturday, her first official public appearance since she revealed the diagnosis earlier this year.
The annual military ceremony celebrates the official birthday of King Charles III, who will also attend after his cancer diagnosis.
“I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet," Kate said in Friday's message, which was posted on social media and accompanied by a new photo of the princess.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said “His Majesty is delighted that The Princess is able to attend tomorrow’s events, and is much looking forward to all elements of the day.”
Kate and Prince William’s children, George, 10, Charlotte, 9, and Louis, 6, have also largely been out of the public eye in recent months. They will join her at Saturday’s event, arriving with her in a carriage down the Mall before watching alongside her on Horse Guards Parade and then making a royal balcony appearance.
The family traditionally gathers on the balcony at the end of each year’s event to watch a flyover by the Royal Air Force.
Kate’s attendance will come as a surprise after she missed the traditional rehearsal event, the Colonel’s Review, last weekend.
Her health had become the subject of widespread speculation and baseless conspiracy theories after the palace said she would be taking a step back from public duties following planned abdominal surgery.
The wife of Britain's future king responded to the months of fervent speculation with a video in March in which she revealed that she had cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy.
In Friday's message, Kate also gave an update on her cancer. She said she was making good progress but that "my treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months."
Kate said: "I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well."
She said that when able, she found it "a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home."
She said she had been “blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months,” which she said “really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.”
Kate added: "I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal. Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me."
While a significant moment, this will not mark a return to a full schedule of public engagements. The palace gave no further details about future public events the princess might attend.
While Kate continues her course of preventative chemotherapy, she has also started to undertake some meetings related to her work.
Charles, who was himself diagnosed with cancer in February, has also been undergoing treatment. Doctors discovered the disease after he was hospitalized with an enlarged prostate, although the palace has said that he does not have prostate cancer.
Both Charles and Kate have declined to specify what type of cancer they have or details about their prognoses.
The 75-year-old monarch has attended several engagements since he resumed public duties last month, including D-Day memorial services in France.
Charles will take part in Trooping the Colour, a traditional show of military pomp and pageantry featuring “over 1,400 officers and soldiers,” along with 200 horses and 400 musicians who play in unison, according to the British army website.
The event in central London will see Charles carry out the review of the guardsmen and officers from a carriage alongside Queen Camilla, rather than on horseback.
At last year’s ceremony, Charles inspected the troops on horseback, reviving a tradition that his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, gave up in 1986 when she was 60. William will be on horseback this year.
Also known as the King’s Birthday Parade, the ceremony has been an annual event since 1760. It is the British military’s annual tribute to the monarch and marks their official birthday.
Charles’ actual birthday is Nov. 14.
