I think the reason that Metal 3d Printers are still so expensive is you have to do laser sintering in a vacuum in order to do this. So, this is an expensive process and not as easy as plastic or nylon 3d printers.
With plastic you can make objects of art. With Nylon you can make some gears for some instruments of all sizes. With metal you can make custom ball joints for hip replacements out of titanium etc.
