MOUNT BALDY, Calif. --
Authorities say thunderstorms that swept through Southern
California have led to the death of one person and caused mudslides that
have stranded more than 2,000 people.
San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Chris Prater said a body was found in a car that was swept into a rain-swollen creek in Mount Baldy and overturned.
The storms brought flash floods that led to a few rescues, while thick debris flows cut off access to two mountain towns and stranded more than 2,000.
Authorities said the stranded in the San Bernardino Mountains include a group of 500 adults and children who had arrived at a campground Sunday morning. Crews were trying to clear the roads with bulldozers to reach the group.
The National Weather Service said the storm dumped up to 4 inches of rain in the mountains east of Los Angeles.

The picture is Forest Falls, California but that is in the Big Bear area further south across interstate 15 up high in the mountains not near Mt. Baldy which is north of Interstate 15. So, if this is in Forest Falls it is in the Big Bear Area not Mt. Baldy, possibly where thousands of people have been stranded likely by roads blocked with what you see in this picture with the 1/2 buried white Van.
Interstate 10 goes out to Palm Springs and towards Arizona but Interstate 15 starts in San Diego and goes through the Cajon pass (which is usually windy) out past Victorville in the desert and further north and north East towards Las Vegas and then to other states.
When I lived in San Diego County from the end of 1969 to around 1979 I skied a lot at Snow Summit during the winters in Big Bear. Though I haven't skied on Mt. Baldy I have ridden the ski lift up to the summit and looked at the view of the desert in the distance and the whole of Los Angeles and Orange counties the other directions towards the ocean from the top of the chair lift with my son.
Oak Glen is also nearer to Big Bear than mt. Baldy.
Later note: IT turns out that a man died on Mt. Baldy when his car was washed away into a stream and boulders came through his windows and killed him along with water. So, this flash flooding occurred not only in the Big Bear area it also killed a man in his car in a stream when he and his car were washed away down a stream in the Mt. Baldy area too.
This sounds a lot like El Nino hitting us once again this year only maybe a lot more powerful than we are used to here in California. Take a look at the 40 inches of rain hitting Japan right now or the Typhoon that will hit Thursday or the two hurricanes about to hit Hawaii. Sounds like El Nino on Steroids.
