These animals that can talk would go places around the world and have adventures. I think I also was reading Dr. Dolittle too but Freddy was maybe more funny for me or something. This then led to a book which was a book about a boy about maybe 12 who rode a schooner around the world and there was this rope he could climb that was magical too. I'm not sure the name of this book. Eventually, this type of adventure series evolved into me reading Robert Heinlein and books like Starship Troopers all the way to "Stranger in a Strange land" which is more of an adult or young adult kind of book to read. I remember another one by Heinlein where two twin brothers were telepathic and they could communicate across space from far apart as like a communication device between earth and where they went in space. One brother was on the space ship and one left here on earth to tell everyone what they were doing in space. Later I read Asimov and Clarke and eventually Silverberg too. I still sometimes read the Ringworld series with Louis Wu for example for fun.
Even though it seems sort of impossible to build a ringworld around a sun like they show in this book like a ribbon with civilizations orbiting the sun like that on this wide ribbon of land.
This for me likely started at an opportune time also because I was 10 in 1958 and the astronauts like Shepard and Glenn and the others went into space in the early 1960s. So, my fantasies of actually going into space and them landing on the moon in Summer of 1969 were realized in reality which was amazing in my young life then too.
These seven original American astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven created a new profession in the United States, and established the image of the American astronaut for decades to come.
