Why?
Because even if the U.S. and Europe stopped researching AI do you really think Putin and Xi would stop researching AI as a weapon of War? NO.
So, at least at this point developing military AI will decide whether ANY democracies survive on earth or not at least at this point in human history.
The real question is: "Will anyone in any nation survive the types of wars we are going to have even if they are proxy wars this century?"
This is a complete unknown at this point.
