Why? Because each wheel has it's own drive system on a Subaru and so literally is an all wheel drive whereas some 4 wheel drives and all wheel drives are not really all wheel drives all the time like a Subaru can be.
So, this is why you see so many Subaru all wheel drives around because on a paved road at least they will be the most likely of all cars to get you through almost anything (snow or mud) as long as you know how to drive in these conditions to begin with.
Here is the one drawback: Though Foresters for example ride a little high so that they are ABOVE THE SNOW or mud you have to be careful when your lower bumper area starts meeting the snow. At that point if you are pushing snow with your front grill this might not work and then you might need a vehicle riding higher off the road (preferably an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive then).
