Basically it appears to be the amount of people in a religion. For example, if there weren't so many Christians and Buddhists and Muslims you could also call all these religions cults too.
But, a cult is basically any way of behaving or thinking out of the norm for planet earth.
But, as you can see if you think about it this doesn't work either because if you have traveled the world there IS NO NORM for thinking and behaving on earth for the entire earth anywhere.
We try to contrive something so people can get along at the United Nations in a somewhat humanistic way but even then there are a lot of disagreements about almost everything.
So, the easiest way to define a cult is a group of people maybe under 1 million worldwide that practice something different than Christianity, Islam or Buddhism or Hinduism.
Something like that.
But, others also might define a cult differently than I am here depending upon their point of view.
