Feature Attraction: 85 years at the drive-in
Our photo today shows patrons driving through the box office at the Fly-In Drive-In Theater in Wall Township, New Jersey, in 1948. Drive-in movie theaters were a growing trend at the time, so the owners of this spot took advantage of the nearby airstrip and added room for 15 small planes to taxi in and watch the show alongside the autos.
Today marks the anniversary of the first true drive-in theater, opened in 1933 in Pennsauken Township, also in New Jersey, more than an hour’s drive inland from the Fly-In. Drive-in theaters were a popular venue for movie-watching until a sharp decline in business during the 1970s and ‘80s nearly drove the idea to extinction. Some legacy theaters survived, and a small resurgence of the drive-in has brought the experience to a new generation of movie fans. Can we still bring our own snacks?

1030's Drive-In History
The Drive -in Theater was always a big deal in my life growing up and even as an adult. I can remember going to a Drive-in Theater in Sunland, California with my then 3 year old Son to see STar Wars for the first time in 1977 for example. I can remember going to a drive-in Theater to see Mash the Movie the night before the big Earthquake in Los Angeles the San Fernando Quake. I can remember going to a movie with my 17 year old Cousin when I was 12 with his girlfriend when I was only 12 years old about Marlon Brando in "One eyed Jacks".
I'm 70 this year so there was never a time in my life at least when Drive-In theaters weren't there for me some place, (even though most of them now are) flea markets on Weekends and movies at night on weekends or they are torn down (one of the two).
