Firefighters continued to make progress on the Carr Fire over the weekend, while containment of the Hirz Fire remained mostly unchanged.
Firefighters also quickly stomped on a 75-acre fire that broke just to the east of Shasta-Trinity National Forest off Highway 36 in Shasta County.
Crews faced wind and heavy timber fuels feeding the fires.
Heavy smoke blanketed the North State Sunday morning. Air quality was considered unhealthy for all people from the Anderson area up through Lakehead, but improved later in the afternoon.
Here's how things stood with the fires on Sunday:
Carr Fire
Containment of the Carr Fire grew from 79 percent on Saturday to 85 percent on Sunday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's 1.15 p.m. incident update.
Carr grew to 227,098 acres, up 13 acres since Saturday night. It ranks as California's seventh largest wildfire in history. To date, the Carr Fire has been linked to eight deaths, and destroyed 1,079 structures.
The fire reached the shores of Lake Shasta and still burns within containment lines. Highway 299 is open to traffic, but the public is asked to drive carefully and be aware fire crews and emergency personnel are working in the area.
The fire prompted the following sites to close inside the Shasta-Trinity National Forest: Lakeshore East and Beehive campgrounds and Sugarloaf boat launch.
Suppression costs for the fire on Sunday were estimated at $138 million, the most expensive among California wildfires.
Hirz Fire
Containment of the Hirz Fire on the McCloud River Arm of Lake Shasta remained at 11 percent as of Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire grew to 14,014 acres, up about 2,000 acres since Friday.
Suppression costs for the fire on Sunday climbed to $7.5 million.
Forest service officials say they want the fire to stay at a low intensity.
"The goal is to create a wide black line along the western edge to stop the fire from spreading any closer to the residents and other improvement in the I-5 corridor. Bulldozer work has also been productive in building and strengthening line on the ridge tops on the western edge of the fire," the afternoon report read.
Road closures include Gilman Road between Old Mill Road and the McCloud River Bridge. Residents who live south of Gilman Road who haven't been ordered to evacuate may be allowed access. Officials warn drivers to use extreme caution when driving Gilman Road and to watch for crews working in the area.
Shasta-Trinity National Forest is closed in the Hirz Fire area while crews try to bring the human-caused blaze under control. The boundary begins at the Interstate 5 corridor and Gilman exit up to I-5 and Fender’s Ferry Road, over to High Mountain then down Gilman to I-5.
The following campgrounds are closed: Hirz Bay, Moore Creek, Pine Point, Ellery Creek, Dekkas Rock and McCloud Bridge.
Evacuations are still in place for residents of Old Mill Road, Bonnie Vista Lane, Top of the Hill Trail, Hirz Mountain Road, the north side of Gilman Road and the Bollibokka Fishing Club.
There's no designated evacuation shelter. Residents who need help can call the American Red Cross at 844-236-0153. Sign up for emergency updates at www.shascom911.com.

Authorities closed Highway 36 between Platina Road and the R Wild Horse Ranch. Some firefighters were pulled from Carr Fire lines to fight the fire.
