Why is Manafort choosing to serve so much time?

Because he doesn't want his family killed while he is in prison. There are things he knows that if he talked about regarding Putin he would be killed either in prison or out of prison either one. So, he is falling on his sword so his family won't be killed. He is sacrificing himself that his family might live on.
