In the 1950s it could be dangerous to your health or pocketbook to say you were an atheist

The first thing people would think is that you were a socialist or Communist and this could be fatal or injurious to your person either physically or financially or both.

So, usually people said they went to church and were either protestant or Catholic whether they were or not so they could physically and financially survive during the 1950s.

It's true there was the ideal of Freedom of Religion in the U.S. but the reality was often something very different.

In some ways the American Dream has only been true for Protestant Christian and Catholic White people until the 1960s and 1970s when things started to change to what we have now. Even though what we have now isn't perfect either it's much better in some ways than what we had in the 1950s.

But, if you were to ask me if things were better now than in the 1950s I would have to be honest and tell you that actually, things are not better at all. They are just different and that's all.

Things are not really better just different because all the changes and confusion has made most people unrealistic and crazy in all sorts of new ways.

It has been better for women and minorities and more of a disaster for men whether they be white or any other race it's been a complete disaster generally for men.

There is really only one exception to this which is that Gay men are less likely to be killed for being gay than the 1950s and it's also true that Black men are less likely to be killed just for being black now too.

Otherwise, I would say it's a complete disaster for men in general what has happened since the 1950s.

And remember I have lived from 1948 to the present day.
