A high-ranked Los Angeles county sheriff’s department official has resigned after his racist emails against Muslims, blacks and Latinos resurfaced.
The department’s former chief of staff Tom Angel had sent several bigoted messages about three to four years ago, during his time as Burbank Police department’s assistant chief, the LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said in a statement.
Angel resigned on Sunday, after a massive outcry to discipline the public official.

“This incident is one that I find deeply troubling,” McDonnell said. “Despite the Sheriff’s Departments many efforts to fortify public trust and enhance internal and external accountability and transparency, this incident reminds us that we and other law enforcement agencies still have work to do.”
In one email from Angel, he forwarded a list of tragedies blaming them on “Devout Muslims,” in defense of racial profiling.
Angel’s emails were proud of being “royally politically incorrect,” laced with offensive jokes like this:
“I took my Biology exam last Friday. I was asked to name two things commonly found in cells. Apparently, ‘Blacks’ and ‘Mexicans’ were NOT the correct answer.”
Moving forward, the sheriff’s department is implementing random checks on email accounts from staffers, along with a complete review of the county’s existing policies for cultural and ethnic sensitivity.
The disgraced LASD ex-employee’s resignation comes just two days after San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr also promised reform among his ranks, as racist texts emerged from the department's officers.
He announced on Friday that all officers would be required to attend anti-bias training, as the SFPD released a bulk of transcripts between officers filled with racist and homophobic messages.
The nine page document obtained by SFGate was packed with use of the N-word, calling Latinos “beaners” and several homophobic slurs.
“It’s clear that people wanted to have this information as quickly as we could properly provide it,” Suhr told reporters at the Friday press conference. “We decided that with the charging of former lieutenant Liu and the end of that criminal investigation, now is the time to just put it out there. And we have nothing to hide.”
While the individual texts are blurred out, the officers involved are identified as Jack Lai, Curtis Liu, and Keith Ybarreta.
Lai was first probed after facing sexual assault allegations, uncovering the racist text scandal. His offensive messages, spewing hate toward LeBron James and President Obama, were released on Tuesday by the city's public defender.
Liu, a former lieutenant, was charged on Wednesday for attempting to obstruct the rape investigation.
Ybarreta and Lai have both resigned from the force, while Liu was able to retire.
