House Speaker Paul Ryan said Monday that he would step down as chairman of this summer's Republican National Convention if presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump asked him to.
"He's the nominee. I'll do whatever he wants with respect to the convention," the Wisconsin Republican told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, responding to the bombastic billionaire's comments a day earlier that he wouldn't rule out trying to remove Ryan from his senior role at the GOP nominating summit in Cleveland in July.
"I just want to get to know the guy," added Ryan, who is scheduled to sit down with the mogul Thursday. "We just don't know each other."
The comments could be a sign of peace between the two politicians, who in recent days have quarreled.

House Speaker Ryan (R-Wis.), who is also the chairman of this summer’s Republican National Convention, said he would step down from his convention role if Trump wanted him to.

DONALD TRUMP ESCALATES FEUD WITH PAUL RYAN
Last week, Ryan said he was "not ready" to support Trump as the party's nominee, claiming that he needed to "see verification" that the magnate would uphold the GOP's "conservative principles." The remarks prompted Trump to suggest over the weekend that he wouldn't rule out taking action to remove the House Speaker from his chairman role at the convention.
But on Monday, Ryan said his earlier comment didn't necessary mean he was withholding his support from Trump indefinitely.

Donald Trump had said he was "blindsided" by Paul Ryan’s decision to not endorse him.

"I never said never. I just said (not) at this point. I wish I had more time to get to know him before this happened. We just didn't," he told the Journal Sentinel.
Ryan also dismissed criticism from Sarah Palin, who accused him Sunday of refusing to support Trump as part of a subtle attempt to aide his own 2020 presidential ambitions.
"I would not have become speaker of the House if I had 2020 aspirations. If I really wanted to run for president, I could have run in 2012 and 2016. The speaker is not exactly a good stepping stone for president. I think people who know me know that is not my aspiration," Ryan said.
