It's about showing kindness to other beings by helping them and often buying gifts for the people you are closest too.
Kindness is the foundation of civilization here on earth and so demonstrating kindness to those around you including yourself is the foundation of civilization itself.
Since there are people who believe in Jesus and then there are secular people who also celebrate Christmas, the kindness and helpfulness part of Christmas is what everyone can agree on.
