In other words realizing that you have an immortal soul and that your experience here on earth is not permanent.
Meditation on impermanence is the primary motivating factor towards enlightenment.
Why is this important?
Because you realize all human beings and animals suffer with this impermanence hanging over their heads from birth until death.
It develops your compassion for all physical beings being in the same boat with you.
You feel compassion for their suffering and you cry alone sometimes because of this.
But, because you are all suffering together you begin to do things to help these suffering beings because they are all suffering like you are.
From this compassion which usually is at first idiot compassion you eventually if successful move towards Right Mindful Compassion towards yourself and all beings in the universe.
From these experiences you move towards complete enlightenment for yourself and all beings in the universe like a Prince a King or a Princess or a Queen and thereby all beings in the universe benefit from your evolution into higher and higher states of enlightenment.
