Where are some of the worst Avalanches on Mt. Shasta? (Avalanche Gulch). However, there have been several avalanches that wiped out the Old Ski Bowl and Lifts as well as one later after the lodge and lifts were removed that brought down many trees in that area too. And later closer to Macbride Campground (not to far up from there that the Avalanche came across the paved road too. But, I'm thinking the road was likely closed then but I think the road had to be rebuilt at that location and cleared of trees, snow and other rocks and debris as well. The time to worry the most about Avalanches is usually about now in February and March. What happens is when rain comes down on snow or when unusual wind patterns at high velocity hit snow or various combinations the snow is destabilized enough to start moving down slopes with the slightest provocation which you might not be aware of. It could be you talking or yelling, it could be your skis cutting in the wrong place at the wrong time it could be anything that can set off a big or small avalanche this time of year. But, usually they don't happen much until at least January. But, unusual conditions likely could create a snow avalanche any time of year there is snow.
