HOLLYWOOD — Blame it on Marvel comics legend Stan Lee who bellowed the famous call, "Avengers Assemble."
Because most every superhero in the known galaxy hit the red carpet for the Avengers: Age of Ultron world premiere on Monday night.
"The beacon went out tonight," said Chadwick Boseman who will star in the upcoming Marvel movie Black Panther. "I even see Lou Ferrigno is here. No one is going to bother us here tonight. All the superheroes here will save the day."
Naturally the stars of the Avengers sequel (opening May 1) sailed down the carpet — Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk).
Robert Downey Jr. continued his goodwill tour after Sunday night's MTV Movie Award honors. Downey was the last superhero to arrive at Monday's red carpet, prompting the biggest screams from the hundreds who lined Hollywood Boulevard, many in superhero garb.
The new Avengers 2 recruits only added to the crowded red carpet, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), James Spader (Ultron) and Paul Bettany (Vision).
Taylor-Johnson said the Avengers crowd are even more insane than the Godzilla crowds he saw for the 2014 blockbuster.
"The Marvel fan base and empire is its own special thing. It's incredible. It's wild. It really is," said Taylor-Johnson.
He had his wife, director Sam Taylor-Johnson, close by his side, but his wife was mum about the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise she just left. The two did confirm it was a rare date night.
"This is the only way we get dates apparently, premieres," said Aaron Taylor-Johnson. "At least we get to watch an awesome movie."
Olsen explained her Galvan ensemble was highlighted with a metal necklace — not for decoration, but to keep her from using the Scarlet Witch's psychic powers.
"It's stopping me from going into everyone's minds," said Olsen. "The moment I start going into people's minds I get zapped."
On top of that crowd there were Marvel Agents of SHIELD stars from the television series and up-and-coming superheroes including Paul Rudd, whose Ant-Man trailer just dropped online.
Boseman was so secretive about his upcoming role in Black Panther that he wouldn't even discuss his workout regimen.
"We're getting in shape," Boseman said. "You don't want to see how much."
The superhero cast from Avengers was so large that they barely fit on the same stage when introduced at the Dolby Theatre. It didn't lead to much individual adulation.
That was fine with Anthony Mackie, whose Falcon appears in Avengers 2.
"I'm just here for the popcorn," said Mackie.
