Some of the national
parks closed during the government shutdown will be able to reopen if
states dip into their own funds to keep them running, AP reports.
Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said those conditions were approved after at least four governors said the closures' economic impact made it worth their investment to keep the parks open. "Secretary Jewell will consider agreements with governors who indicate an interest and ability to fully fund National Park Service personnel to reopen national parks in their states," said Interior spokesman Blake Androff.
Arizona, Colorado, South Dakota, and Utah have all shown willingness to pitch in to keep their parks operational. Former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said earlier Thursday that park closures were costing $76 million a day.
