I have written about Terminalia Arjuna Before. However, I have drilled down a little further into what it is and where to get it this time. However, one thing said was that begin quote:
POSSIBLY SAFE ...when used orally
and appropriately, short term. Several small studies have used the
powdered bark of Terminalia arjuna safely in cardiac patients
in trials lasting from 2 weeks to 3 months; however, patients should
avoid self-treatment with this product, due to the potentially
significant cardiovascular effects. end quote from:
http://www.amazondiscovery.com/Arjuna.html?gclid=CL234e31jboCFYaDQgod9hUARw#Arjuna
However, it also says: begin quote: "
Orally, Terminalia arjuna is used for cardiovascular
conditions, including ischemic heart disease and angina, hypertension,
and hyperlipidemia. It is also used orally as a diuretic, for
earaches, dysentery, venereal and urogenital diseases, and as an
aphrodisiac." end quote also from:
http://www.amazondiscovery.com/Arjuna.html?gclid=CL234e31jboCFYaDQgod9hUARw#Arjuna
Also, it mentions that Terminalia Arjuna has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of heart problems by Auryuvedic practitioners in India.
So, likely self treatment might not be the best idea. So, what I would likely do is to consult with an Auryuvedic practitioner here in the U.S. that you trust that has enough training to feel comfortable with. Also, I'm not sure about how it might react with other heart medicines like Lisinopril or Coreg.
My interest in this is because I cannot take Coreg and so my son is concerned I might pass on within 5 or 10 years if I don't take Coreg. (He has a BS in Nursing from a California state university and was an honor student.) However, my experience with Coreg is I'm not rational when I use it and because I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall I would rather have quality of life than worry about what I might do if I'm not rational. Without quality of life why live at all? So, for me, I am looking for an alternative to Coreg that might work better. A whole lot of people are taking Lisinopril like me but cannot take Coreg either. Another drug I find I cannot take is Lipitor because one of the potential side affects is muscle wasting which I started to get when I took Lipitor. So I can't take that one either. So, I'm looking for an herbal medicine to extend my life and good health as long as possible. And Terminalia Arjuna is one of those good possibilities that has already been used successfully for thousands of years in India already.
It is grown in India and Sri lanka and is a tree.
Terminalia arjuna
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terminalia arjuna, commonly known as
arjuna[1] or
arjun tree in English,
[2] Thella Maddi in Telugu and
Marudha Maram in Tamil is a tree of the
genus Terminalia.
Description
The arjuna is about 20–25 metres tall; usually has a
buttressed
trunk, and forms a wide canopy at the crown, from which branches drop
downwards. It has oblong, conical leaves which are green on the top and
brown below; smooth, grey bark; it has pale yellow flowers which appear
between March and June; its glabrous, 2.5 to 5 cm fibrous woody fruit,
divided into five wings, appears between September and November.
[1][2]
Distribution and habitat
The arjuna is usually found growing on river banks or near dry river beds in
West Bengal and south and central
India.
[1] It is known as
neer maruthu in
Tamil and
Malayalam, Thella Maddi (తెల్ల మద్ది) in
Telugu and
kohda in
Rajasthan.
Importance
Silk production
The arjuna is one of the species whose leaves are fed on by the
Antheraea paphia moth which produces the tassar silk (
tussah), a
wild silk of commercial importance.
[3]
Medicinal
In studies in mice, its leaves have been shown to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

The arjuna was introduced into Ayurveda as a treatment for heart disease by
Vagbhata (c. 7th century CE).
[4] It is traditionally prepared as a milk decoction.
[4] In the
Ashtānga Hridayam, Vagbhata mentions arjuna in the treatment of wounds, hemorrhages and ulcers, applied topically as a powder.

Pentaptera glabra; Terminalia bellirica, synonym Myrobalanus bellirica;
Terminalia chebula.
Family: Combretaceae.
People Use This For:
Orally, Terminalia arjuna is used for cardiovascular
conditions, including ischemic heart disease and angina, hypertension,
and hyperlipidemia. It is also used orally as a diuretic, for
earaches, dysentery, venereal and urogenital diseases, and as an
aphrodisiac.
Orally, Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula are used for
hyperlipidemia and digestive disorders, including both diarrhea and
constipation, and indigestion. They have also been used for
HIV infection. Terminalia bellerica is also used orally as a
hepatoprotectant and for respiratory conditions, including respiratory
tract infections, cough, and sore throat. Terminalia chebula
is also used orally for dysentery.
Topically, Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula are used as a
lotion for sore eyes. Terminalia chebula is also used topically as a
mouthwash and gargle.
Intravaginally, Terminalia chebula is used as a douche for
treating vaginitis.
In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Terminalia bellerica has been
used as a "health-harmonizer" in combination with Terminalia chebula and
Emblica officinalis. This combination is also used to
lower cholesterol and to prevent necrosis of cardiac tissue. In
traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Terminalia arjuna has been used to
balance the three humors, kapha, pitta, and vata. It has
also been used for asthma, bile duct disorders, scorpion stings, and for
poisonings.
Safety:
POSSIBLY SAFE ...when used orally
and appropriately, short term. Several small studies have used the
powdered bark of Terminalia arjuna safely in cardiac patients
in trials lasting from 2 weeks to 3 months; however, patients should
avoid self-treatment with this product, due to the potentially
significant cardiovascular effects. Further study is needed to
determine the safety of Terminalia arjuna for long-term use.
There is insufficient reliable information available about the
safety of Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula.
PREGNANCY: POSSIBLY UNSAFE ...when used orally. One
source warns against using Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula
during pregnancy; however, the reason for this warning is
not described; avoid using.
There is insufficient reliable information available about the
safety of Terminalia arjuna in pregnancy; avoid using.
LACTATION: Insufficient reliable information available; avoid using
Effectiveness:
POSSIBLY EFFECTIVE
Angina. Taking terminalia orally seems to be effective as a
short-term adjunct to conventional therapy for treating postmyocardial
infarction angina. In one small clinical trial,
postmyocardial infarction patients with angina taking Terminalia
experienced significantly less angina, improved left ventricular
ejection fractions, and decreased left ventricular mass
compared to patients receiving the standard therapy alone.
Congestive heart failure (CHF). Taking Terminalia
orally as a short-term adjunct to conventional therapy seems to be
effective for treating severe congestive heart failure. In a
small cross-over trial, patients with severe, refractory congestive
heart failure had significant reductions in symptoms and improved left
ventricular function after 2 weeks of treatment.
Large-scale, long-term trials are necessary to clarify Terminalia's
potential role in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions.
There is insufficient reliable information available about the
effectiveness of Terminalia for its other uses.
Mechanism of Action:
There are three species of terminalia of medicinal
interest: Terminalia arjuna, Terminalia bellerica, and Terminalia
chebula. The applicable part of Terminalia arjuna is the bark.
The bark contains several active constituents, including Terminalia
arjuna gallic acid, ethyl gallate, and the flavone luteolin. Luteolin
may have anticancer properties. The bark of Terminalia
arjuna is reported to be beneficial in cardiovascular conditions;
however, the exact mechanism is not known. Terminalia arjuna is reported
to lower serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
levels. It is also thought to have an antihypertensive effect and act as
a cardiac stimulant. However, studies have been
conflicting; some indicating that it may actually increase blood
pressure.
The applicable part of Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula
is the fruit. These species also have been reported to improve lipid
profiles, but to a lesser degree than Terminalia arjuna.
Terminalia chebula is reported to have a greater effect on lipids than
Terminalia bellerica. The astringent properties of Terminalia bellerica
and Terminalia chebula are attributed to their beneficial
effects in bowel irregularity and indigestion. Terminalia bellerica also
contains gallic acid, and is thought to have hepatoprotective
properties. An ethanolic extract of Terminalia chebula containing gallic
acid and its ethyl ester may have activity against
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus .
Terminalia chebula may also have activity against cytomegalovirus (CMV),
herpes simplex I, Streptococcus mutans, Salmonella sp., Shigella, and
retroviral reverse transcriptase. Both Terminalia
bellerica and Terminalia chebula may have activity against HIV. The
gallic acid and chebulagic acid in Terminalia chebula may
have immunosuppressive effects against cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
Adverse Reactions:
None reported in humans. In animal studies, Terminalia chebula has caused hepatic and renal lesions.
Herbal treatment for heart disease in offing?
Durgesh Nandan Jha, TNN Aug 19, 2012, 02.12PM IST
The answer to the treatment and management of chronic heart failure may
lie in Aurveda, say AIIMS doctors. A multi-disciplinary team of
cardiologists and pharmacologists at the premier institute are
investigating to scientifically prove the efficacy of capsule containing
the stem bark of terminalia arjuna - a medicinal plant used by
Ayurvedic physicians since ages - to treating the disease as. The animal
trials and pre-clinical safety trials on human beings have been
completed successfully and the result of human trials, which is under
process, is encouraging, the doctors said.
"Human trials have
been on more than 20, mild to moderate, heart failure patients after
taking due consent and required permission. Till date, we have not found
any serious side effect," said a doctor involved with the project. He
said that total 100 such patients will be reviewed over the to see the
effect of this herbal medicine. In this randomized trial, the heart
failure patients coming for treatment are divided into two subgroups and
administered the capsules containing the herbal medicine or placebo
without telling them. The improvement or side-effects are then studied
on routine basis.
Said Dr S K Maulik, the principal investigator for this project, "We
have working on this project for more than 10 years. The animal trials
and pre-clinical safety were completed successfully in year 2006 and now
the human trials are on. But any detail on the success of the project
cannot be divulged before its completion." He said that high-end
scientific procedures including microscopic verification of the sample
of arjuna bark, botanical authentication and chemical finger printing
are being used to ensure a fool-proof system for the trials. Maulik
said, according to the animal trials conducted, the arjuna capsules
helped in improving the symptoms and preventing the progression of heart
failure by augmenting the endogenous cardiac anti-oxidants and
induction of heat-shock proteins.
According to Dr Y K Gupta, the
head of the pharmacology department at AIIMS, the drug terminalia Arjuna
has been used in Ayurveda for cardiac ailments since ancient times.
Arjuna is a dense and tall tree and has long, cone shaped round leaves
and a white bark used in medicines. The tree is indigenous to India
though it is also found in Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
