If I were to define what is harming Russia and China the most at this juncture in world history it would be Bribery and Cronyism because they both prevent progress and fair disposition and resolution of legal situations both in business and amongst the general public.
Though the U.S. deals with this too, it is much less rampant than in places like Russia and China. Mostly you see Bribery and Cronyism within Corporations, in small towns and in relation to business Lobbyists in Congress which in the U.S. becomes a legalized form of bribery and cronyism. Also, since Congressional members are not subject to SEC rules regarding privileged information regarding stocks, this also becomes an unfair advantage given to Congressional leaders and another reason why only the richest of people become Congress people now in both the House and Senate.
But, corruption in Russia and Chinese cultures has been far more rampant for centuries now. Both, before Communism and after. So, even though communism was instituted to end corruption, under communism it only got much worse among the upper classes within this system.
The idea then (in 1917) was "From each according to his abilities and to each according to his needs". However, people are much too selfish creatures to actually make this work for millions of people. It might work in a Church or non-profit when everyone is watching everyone and keeping them honest but it definitely doesn't work for millions of people because it is too easy to hide things the more people involved.
So, capitalism, based upon greed and ambition tends to work better than communism just because of human nature. However, Capitalism combined with a useful democracy seems to bring the most amount of progress in any society the quickest for the most people. However, with Global Climate Change it is now difficult to say how this new changing weather worldwide is going to affect billions of people other than to say that many many more people are going to be dying in weather catastrophes at one time than before.
