Germany in the 1930's were prospering where as other countries economies were failing. Hitler was a madman who drew his people into an unwanted war but because of his evil methods. They as a nation had to abide otherwise they would have met their death by the commands of their own leader.
Hitler seen other countries as being a threat to the Deutch economy and the Jews were the first to be exiled due to rich ownership of large shops and stores etc. After the Jewish families fled Germany for the sake of their own lives, the German army proceeded into other European countries to gain economic power. Slowly but surely Germany was gaining more land and more power as each month passed. Because of Hitler's success, he eventually decided that he could take on the world but when he invaded Poland Britain stepped in before Hitler could advance any further.
A lot of the Polish came to Britain in support and had to learn to fly Spitfires and Hurricanes within three days. After a week they were fighting in batlle with the allies over the English coast and the channel in defence of Britain.
The Luftwaffe (Deutch Air Force) were slowly being wiped out due to the speed of our planes along with support of our precious new radar system that helped detect the german plane before hand.
The German 'U' boats were out in force sinking precious cargo heading for the UK mainland in the Atlantic so Hitler failing in the skies tried to cripple us by starvation etc. Although the subs were a nuisance to convoys they claimed it was a success but when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour in the USA the American joined in to turn it from a European war to a World war which of course it did. With the support from the US Naval ships, they helped to destroy many of the 'U' boats in Europe and the atlantic although it was Britain that discovered the Enigma machine and cracked the German secret code. This was a huge downfall for Hitler.
So the answer to your question was that it was economic power that Hitler eas trying to achieve but it went much further than that when he became a threat to the world.

I think the reason that Putin may want to take over all the lands that the Soviet Union controlled after World War II is economic power as well. In the last week or two he has taken over (without possibly losing even one Russian Soldier) hundreds of millions of dollars worth of land, military hardware, Army and Navy Bases, ships etc. Just the economic gains he has plundered so far would make him not want to stop taking more land or resources on land and sea.
So, if sanctions don't really work then we are sure to see him take the rest of Ukraine and other nations too until the cost becomes to high for him to continue.
Also, his oil reserves will likely run out before 2050 and right now the Russian economy isn't doing well either. So, having a war of sorts is likely keeping him in power when otherwise he might have been removed from power within the next year or so by the powers that be in Russia.
