Associates of Michael Flynn were slapped with federal subpoenas on Tuesday.
(Carlos Barria/REUTERS)CNN said the subpoenas were issued in recent to people who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014.
Prosecutors are focusing in on the way Flynn handled disclosures about payments from clients tied to foreign governments including Russia and Turkey, the network said.
The notices compelling the associates to testify were the first sign that the FBI has stepped up its investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives.

The network, attributing its report to sources, said Flynn and the Justice Department declined to comment.
