James Comey was fired from the FBI Tuesday shortly after the agency sent subpoenas to associates of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, whose ties to Russia are under investigation, according to a report.
CNN said the subpoenas were issued in recent to people who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was forced out as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014.
Prosecutors are focusing in on the way Flynn handled disclosures about payments from clients tied to foreign governments including Russia and Turkey, the network said.
The notices compelling the associates to testify were the first sign that the FBI has stepped up its investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives.

The network, attributing its report to sources, said Flynn and the Justice Department declined to comment.

Flynn was forced to resign as Trump’s national security adviser just weeks after Trump took office after he failed to disclose the nature of phone discussions with Russia's ambassador in Washington, Sergey Kislyak, during the Trump transition.
Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general who was fired in 2015 by the Obama administration, became a Trump loyalist during last year’s campaign.
A day earlier former acting Attorney General Sally Yates told a Senate panel that she warned the White House that Flynn was a blackmail risk because of his ties to Russia.
